Store a baseball glove clean, conditioned, and with a ball in the pocket, wrapped loosely closed, in a cool dry place out of direct sun and heat. Never leave it in a hot car, a damp bag, or a garage that swings between hot and cold — heat dries and cracks the leather, and damp grows mold.
Before you put it away
- Clean it. Get the season’s dirt and sweat off so they don’t sit in the leather all winter. How to clean a glove →
- Condition it. A light coat of conditioner keeps the leather from drying out in storage.
- Shape it. Put a ball in the pocket and wrap the glove loosely closed to hold its shape.
Where to keep it
- Cool and dry — a closet shelf indoors is ideal.
- Out of direct sun and heat — heat dries and cracks leather.
- Never a hot car or damp bag — the two fastest ways to ruin a glove in the offseason.
Don’t do this
- Don’t leave it crushed at the bottom of an equipment bag all winter.
- Don’t store it damp — that’s how mold starts.
- Don’t drown it in oil "to protect it" — that does the opposite.
